Quarterly Spreads

In 2018 I was contracted to design five spreads for The Bible Project’s quarterly magazine.

The Bible Project Quarterly is a unique publication that takes you behind the scenes with the artists, animators, and theologians. It is exclusively for supporters.

Comment Section

The first section I designed was the comment section. This recaps some of the notable comments that were received on The Bible Project’s latest youtube video. This video was on spiritual beings. The art direction was to create a background that used recurring motifs throughout the video’s illustration.

Inspiration

When it came time to create the background of each spread I took motivation from several scenes of the Bible Project’s latest video on spiritual beings.

 Background Imagery

The Final Imagery for the spreads was a very playful style. Filled with motifs of stars, crowns and organic shapes taken from the spiritual beings video.

Final Spreads

The final spreads have the background illustrations as the main focus with comments space out around the spread.

 Angel of the Lord

This section of the quarterly explains the relationship between God and the angel of the Lord. The art direction was to demonstrate this relationship in an abstract way using shapes and textures.

Lot’s of shapes.

I decided to show this through two of the same shapes but different color and opacity overlapping to show that God and the Angel of the Lord are the same but also different. The first step to this was by creating lots of shapes.

 Final Background

The final backgrounds include two pairs of shapes per spread. One large pair with an adjacent smaller pair.

Final Spreads

The final spreads feature articles describing who the Angel of the Lord is spaced out around the abstract shapes representing the relationship.
